Experience

Hello! I am a recent transplant to Delaware, hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area. I moved out here for the slower pace of life, beautiful beaches and sweeping vistas. When I am not exploring all of the natural beauty that Delaware has to offer, I am teaching. I spent the last two years of college working part time at a school that specialized in remedial reading, comprehension and writing. I performed assessments on incoming students, created individualized education plans and helped students close the gap between their performance and potential. I have extensive experience working with students with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, autism and ADD/ADHD. When I am not tutoring in remedial subjects, I teach English and Essay writing skills through the college level, with a focus on helping my students learn how to become successful, independent writers and thinkers. I also enjoy teaching ESL students, as well as ACT/SAT prep. When I am not working you can find me outside, usually by or in the water, or spending time with my horses. I love to read, and encourage all of my students to read as much as possible, as I believe it is one of the biggest factors in becoming a successful writer and communicator! The most influential people in my life have been my teachers, and I love having the opportunity to give back to my community and help the next generation achieve success in their own lives. Education is such a gift, and I am honored to be a small part of my students journeys towards a bright future. In addition to recording perfect scores on the Reading, Writing and Comprehension sections of the ACT and SAT, I am a lifelong reader and avid writer. Being able to read and write well is the foundation for a successful life, as verbal and written communication are the pillars of any higher level studies or interactions in the workplace. English permeates all aspects of our lives, and having a solid grasp of how to use the language is crucial. Learning how to read and write well can be a difficult and daunting task for some students, but my experience and patience means that my students are always progressing, while feeling supported and encouraged as they tackle new and often challenging tasks. I have a deep understanding of how the English language is broken down into its competent parts, and was trained to teach phonics using the Lindamood-Bell method. In order to read and comprehend successfully, students must have the correct building blocks in place- an understanding of the alphabet and the sounds letters can make, how certain letters sound when put together, and how letters and sounds come together to form words. The English language is tricky, but it does have some rules that help make it easier to understand! Phonics can be broken down into three component parts- visual, auditory and kinesthetic. Students must be able to see letters and sounds as they are written down, hear them correctly, and be able to form and feel the sounds in their mouth. 9 times out of 10 a student having difficulty learning to read is missing one of these core elements. Learning to read is akin to building a house- a strong foundation must be present for a sturdy house to stand on. Phonics is the foundation of reading, writing and all further education in life, and individualized attention to detail is crucial in helping phonics students succeed. When I first started teaching, I set a goal to become the kind of teacher that I would want to learn from. I want my students to be challenged and succeed, while also feeling comfortable enough to ask questions and understand that mistakes and confusion are all part of the educational journey. I am passionate about my work, and go above and beyond to make sure that my students receive the best help possible. There is no one-size-fits all method to learning, and each student requires a different approach. I offer individualized attention and education that ensures each student is meeting his or her unique potential. Please contact me should you have any further questions, or if you would like to schedule a initial consultation!
